I am considering a variety of new or slightly used tractors including new Kubota 3710, John Deere (new, model to be determined) and NH 40D new. One used rig that has come across my radar is a 2120 (approx 42 HP I believe with SS trans)with 540 hrs. It comes equiped with SST, a Woods frame mounted 9 ft backhoe and mechanical thumb (what a great attachment!), cab w/ heater and 3 yrs left on 5 yr warranty and looks to have been VERY well maintained. Owner claims to grease after every use and to do more than required maintenance (judging by his other equipment and the 2120 I believe him). Price I would accept would be approximately $22,500. My question to the group is: What is the record on this model and how would it stack up against the Kubota and comparable JD machines? I can live without the HST that I would choose if I went with a new JD or Kubota but the reliability, performance and overall functionality are the prime considerations for me. Anyone have any thoughts? Much appreciated.

I haven't heard anything bad about them. There just aren't many of them around. I have the impression that they are sort of an orphaned model. The largest of the compacts (2110's are included along with 1110's in my part manual). My impression is that people who wanted something that size tended to look for utility tractors rather than compacts.

The 1720 is a well regarded tractor, and I have no reason to believe that the 2120 is any different—just that not many people bought them. I imagine that it's no longer in production. I think the 1720 went out of production in '99 with introduction of the Boomers, but many of the '20-series sort of have reemerged in the TC series. Buying an out of production tractor shouldn't be much of a negative.
